Lung tissue. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the inner surface of a bronchiole (the tiny airways within the lung). The epithelium consists of ciliated cells and mucus secreting cells (round). Particles entering the lung together with the air are immobilized my the mucus and transported by the cilia out of the lung. Also seen are three red blood cells (erythrocytes) at centre. Magnification: x1372 when printed 10 centimetres high.
