A sectional view of the cylinder and slide valve of the replica Rocket locomotive, NRM Locomotion, Shildon, NE England.

The replica Rocket steam locomotive situated at the National Railway Museum's Shildon (Locomotion) site has cut away sections to demonstrate how it worked. The Rocket was the eventual victor at the celebrated Rainhill Trials, intended to select suitable locomotives for work on the Liverpool to Manchester railway in 1829. This sectioned replica shows some of the key features that made the locomotive successful, for example the multi-tubular boiler, steam collecting dome, valve gear and the exhaust blast pipes. Also shown are the twin safety valves, one spring loaded and the other gravity operated.
