The history of Upshur county, West Virginia, from its earliest exploration and settlement to the present time .. . , 2,222 feet; Buckhannon town, 1,405 feet; Lorentz, 1,435feet; Mick Hill, 1,810 feet; Rural Dale, 1,122 feet; Pecks Run, 1,419 feet;Hinkle, 1,431 feet; Swamp Run, 1,721 feet; Hemlock, 2,461 feet; Palace Valley,2,506 feet; Alexander, 1,817 feet; Alton, 1,809 f^^^; Sago, 1,422 feet; mouth ofFrench creek, 1,412 feet; Overhill 1,432 feet; Newlonton, 1,910 feet; KanawhaHead, 1,903 feet; Pickens, 2,672 feet. These elevations when studied closely and comparatively, impress uponthe mind the conviction that the topography of the county was that of a plainor plateau at some time in the past; that this land stood at a much lower altitudethan now, in fact was sea-bottom for ages. It has since been raised graduallyto its present elevation. The high hills which are noted in the list of elevationspreserved because of the fact that the rocks forming them were unusually hard, and therefore, they were protected from erosion. The uneven surface wasproduced by the uneven density and hardness of the ASH CAMP ROCK, ON BUCKHAXNOX RiVEK.
