The draught deer as a rule are pretty quiet, anddraw up together more or less of their own are brought up on to the level rise on whichstands the choom, and then the women and children en-circle the lots, with a bit of light string held in the hand,while the men going into the ring make up their variousteams. Some of the deer have to be caught and haltered ;some are so quiet that an arm over their necks is suffi-cient to guide them about. Then the creatures are harnessed up, and off we go. The two little girls each drove their team of threereindeer, and wonderfully well they managed, jumping on. NOMADS 167 to the sleigh when the deer were at the trot as easilyas their elders. The light-heartedness of these children was delight-ful to see. They wanted to drive races, but were notallowed, because the deer were not at their best. Butthey were laughing and chattering all the time, and weremuch concerned about their puppies, which kept rolling-helplessly about on the sleighs. All other movable things were roped down on thesleigh with strips of sealskin ; but you cant rope downa fat, round puppy. We were not yet promoted to team-driving, so I hadnothing to do but sit on my sleigh and take snap-shotswith the camera at anything I chose.
