The Mauch Chunk is composed chiefly of red arenaceous and argil-laceous shales, the argillaceous shales being a bright red and par-ticularly prominent in the lower part. A little above the middle ofthe formation there lies in one almost continuous body about onehundred feet of soft, flaggy, fine-grained, reddish-green to brownish-red sandstone. The sandstones are very generally micaceous, as arealso many of the middle and upper shales. Between the Mauch Chunk and the Greenbrier there is a greenishbrccciated sandstone which near the mouth of Stony Run is four feetthick. At the top of the Mauch Chunk there is also a four-foot transi-tion band of highly brecciated reddish arenaceous limestones above MARYLAND GEOLOGICAL SURVEY.
