Tree shade boat, container gift-shop, wooden restaurant, red Flamboyant Tree, Paradise Beach car-park, Carriacou, West Indies

At 34 square kilometres (13 square miles) and 16 mile long, Carriacou is the largest island of the Grenadines. The climate is tropical and the hilly terrain slopes to white beaches. There are no rivers and local residents rely on rainwater for their water supply. Paradise Beach, seen here, and served by several restaurants, bars, gift shops, is one of several beautiful beaches on the island, which is part of Grenada. Boat-building, fishing and sea-faring feature in the local economy. Red flowered Flamboyant Trees are a noticeable feature of the Caribbean landscape in May-September. The trees need a tropical climate, but are tolerant of salty soils. They have nitrogen-fixing and soil improvement properties. A shot taken in the summer rainy season, when tourism is less active.
