. The street railway review . mos from the forward or full load point to the neutral ornon-sparking position. This is comparatively slow workwith the hand wheel and screw, or other more complicateddevices which are sent out with the generators by thehuilders. The device shown in the accompanying illustra-tion is very quick, simple and easy to operate, being merelya new application of the eccentric. It is a great in just such an emergency as I have stated. I haveseen the brushes of five dynamos reset to the non-sparking 228 ^tM^lM^^to/* point, the circuit-breakers closed and the machines all con-nected to the main bus bars in two minutes. With theslow-moving hand wheel and screw it would take longerthan that merely to set back the bnjshes. Two or threeminutes of excessive sparking due to this cause producesmore wear and tear on brushes and commutators thanrunning at full load for a month. The eccentric and strap can be cast in brass and machinedto i^, I/i or 1^4 in- throw, according to what the dynamos. FIG. I.—circuit-breakeralarm. may require. There is no need of any clamping arrange-ment, as the eccentrics never shift of themselves. Circuit-breakers sometimes open without making anynoise, which would be noticed above the din of belts andvalve-gear, and as there are times when the operator is outof the dynamo room or busily engaged in work remotefrom the switchboard, there ought to be some arrangementin connection with the moving parts of the circuit-breakerto give a signal that would be heard, and which would pre-vent those unnecessary and annoying tie-ups that are liableto occur unless there is some one in constant attendanceat the switchboard. Some of the devices used are coloredsignal lamps, a magnetic arrangement operating a steamwhistle, and other complicated affairs which are liable toform connections between closed and open circuit-breakerswhen opened by the effects of lightning discharges. In Fig. I is shown a simple device that can be made
