Around the inner wall of a testicular lobe is the germinal epithelium, containing various types of germinal cells, which may be distin- guished from one another on the basis of position, size, appearance of chromatin, and staining intensity. In a testis actively producing sperm (cf. Fig. 3C), the germinal ep- ithelium is comprised of columns, with the spermatogonia at the base, followed distally by spermatocytes, then spermatids.
