The Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD-8) docked along the San Francisco waterfront. The Makin Island is the second ship of the United States Navy to be named for the Marine Raiders Makin Island raid that occurred early on during the United States Involvement in the Second World War.
