Armstrong Gun Works. View from the river of the docks, ships, factories and buildings of the Armstrong Gun Works located at Elswick near Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK. This large armaments factory was founded in 1847 by William Armstrong (1810-1900). It became the Elswick Ordnance Company in the mid-1850s, and for many decades provided a large amount of employment in the area. The factories here were able to build a entire warship, complete with guns. The naval yard and factories were sold off in 1968. This photograph, which dates from 16 April 1915, is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries.
