By the action of Hydrochloric Acid on Chloride [Hypochlo7ite]of Lime.—This method may be resorted to when binoxide of manga-nese cannot be procured. The products of the reaction of the ingre-dients are, chlorine, water, and chloride of calcium. Properties.—Chlorine, at ordinary temperatures and pressures, isa gaseous substance, having a yellowish-green colour, a pungent, suifocating odour, and an astringent taste. 100 cubic inches weigh, according to Dr. Thomson, 77*8615 grs.; and its sp. gr., therefore, is2*5 [247, Berzelius]. Its equivalent by weight is 36° [35*47 Berz.;35*42 Turner] by volume 1 ; hydrogen being unity. It isnot combustible, but is a supporter of combustion. Phos-phorus and powdered antimony take tire spontaneouslyAvhen introduced into it; and a taper burns in it, with theevolution of a red light and much smoke. When water ispresent it destroys vegetable colours, or
