The battle of Pittsburg Land-ing was fought with great loss of life to the there was a call for three hundred thousand men,and soon another call for that many more, as if the Gov-ernment had decided to arise in her mighty strength andpower and crush the Rebellion at once. Enlistments had been going on steadily and theyoung and middle-aged had been perceptibly thinnedout from among us. Up to this time I had not thought itnecessary that I should go.
