Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Mosquito pupa (Culex sp.). Mosquito larvae develop through four stages, or instars, after which they metamorphose into pupae. At the end of each instar, the larvae moult, shedding their skins to allow for further growth. The pupal stage is found only in holometabolous insects (that undergo a complete metamorphosis), going through four life stages: embryo, larva, pupa and imago. Magnification: x4 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
