St Petersburg, Russia - 12 June 2011; group of people in view. St Petersburg 's metro system is not quite as lavish as Moscows' prestige and propaganda-led equivalent. But it works well enough, in a rather drab manner. Actually, this escalator is rather unexciting compared with some of the more lavish Construction of the then-Leningrad metro began in 1941, but was defered due to World War II and the horrific siege of the city, during which the constructed stations were used as bomb shelters. It was finally opened in 1955.
