Thus an apricot is said to have been worked on a green- gage plum, and a quince upon the au- tumn bergamot pear; the apricot be- came as juicy as the green-gage, and far more delicate ; the quince was much more tender, and less gritty. See Stocks and Grafting. SCISSORS of vari- ous sizes are required by the gardener. A pair with very sharp and pointed blades is required for cutting away the anthers of flowers in hybrydiz- ing. Stouter pairs are used for removing flower stalks, when the petals have fallen from roses, &c. Slid- ing pruning scissors (Fig. 151) are em- ployed for cutting the shoots ofshrubs; they are powerful instru- ments for the pur- pose. See Shears. SCLEROTHAMNUS microphyllus.
