Early seismographs. US seismologist and Jesuit, Father Francis Anthony Tondorf (right) and assistant (left), with early seismographs in a laboratory at Georgetown University, Washington DC, USA. Seismographs are used to study earthquakes. These are Galitzin horizontal seismographs, at the time the only one of their type on that side of the Atlantic Ocean. They were among the most sensitive available at the time. Tondorf, who became assistant observer here in 1905, became a professor of physics here in 1913, and a professor of geology in 1914. His assistant is a fellow Jesuit from Spain. Tondorf died on 29 November 1929. Photographed on 22 January 1929.
