Cooke and Wheatstone telegraph. 19th-century artwork of the five-needle electric telegraph developed in the 1830s by British inventors William Fothergill Cooke (1806-1879) and Charles Wheatstone (1802-1875). Letters from a grid of 20 (top) was signalled with five needles. Here, two needles are tilted by the electric current, pointing to the letter 'B'. Six letters (C, J, Q, U, X and Z) were omitted. This artwork is from 'Der Elektromagnetische Telegraph in den einzelnen Stadien seiner Entwicklung' (The Electromagnetic Telegraph in the Various Stages of its Development, 1850) by German author Heinrich Schellen (1818-1884).
