Soldiers from the New York Guard State Defense Force 88th Area Command, and 14th Detachment, based out of NYC and Long Island, led by Lieutenant Colonel, Joram Aris, Commander of the 14th Detachment, march down the parade route along Fifth Ave in NYC. Over 70 soldiers from the NY Guard are on state active duty at Camp Smith Training Site in Cortlandt Manor, NY assisting in the collection, sorting and distribution of donations for Hurricane Relief efforts in Puerto Rico. The Grand Marshal this year was the legendary astronaut Buzz Aldrin, who served in the Air Force and was the second man on the moon, piloting the Apollo 11 and following Neil Armstrong onto the lunar surface in 1969.
