Stopping in this fashion willstretch the train, so that when it comesto rest, a good many of the rear cars willsurge forward and thus decrease the deadweight to be started by the engine. Inthis way the whole train will be put inmotion simultaneously. Of course, caremust be taken in applying the locomotivebrakes especially if the slack is momen-tarily bunched at the head end. Other-wise a drawbar may be pulled. WlLLI.\M G. L.\NDON. WW York, N. MUiiatikce, Wis. Taking Up the Slack. Editor : We often see an engineer having greatdifficulty in starting a long freight on agrade or even failing to do so. He triesto take up slack but frequently before hecan get the lever over, the slack has allrun out on account of the grade. Here is an easy way if the locomotivehas the E. T. equipment or straight airbrake. First get the train moving back-ward, reversing if necessary, but the levermust be again in forward gear before the Fireboxes and Tube : Can any of the readers of Locomoti\e Engineering tell whythe railroads do not adopt the Wood fire-boxes and tube plates? It would be agreat satisfaction to have some explana-tion, inasmuch as the records printed of.^omc
