Emanuel Krescenc Liška - Cain - 1885

The book of Genesis tells the story of Cain and Abel, sons of Adam and Eve. The brothers both gave offerings to god but god didn’t care for Cain’s offering. He was jealous of Abel, took him out to a field, and killed him. When god found out he said “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the soil. And so, cursed shall you be by the soil that gaped with its mouth to take your brother’s blood from your hand. If you till the soil, it will no longer give you strength. A restless wanderer shall you be on the earth.” Liška gives us a tortured Cain, forever condemned to roam alone in a harsh landscape - Jen Brown - Narrative Painting
