A stained glass window depicting Faith by Francis Eginton 1795, St Alkmund's Church, Shrewsbury, Shropshire

This remarkable window by Francis Egington was installed in the east of St Alkmund's Church, Shrewsbury, in October 1795. It depicts St Faith in a setting reminiscent of pilgrimage. The depiction of the woman is directly influenced by Guido Reni's painting The Assumption of the Virgin (c1642). Despite having been painted well before the great Gothic Revival of the mid 1800s the work is remarkable for its modernity, it being painted across a large number of clear rectangular panes of glass rather than a mosaic style of coloured and painted glass adopted later.
