Central Sands night beach view to blue red Blackpool Tower behind illuminated Central Pier Big Wheel, Blackpool Illuminations
The Central Pier dates to 1864, the year after the more genteel North Pier. In 1990 the pier was strengthened, at a cost of £75,000, to take the weight of the 32m (108ft) tall 'Big Wheel', here illuminated. The Sky Flyer is a recent flying machine ride, where tourists sit in seats which rise and spin, on the promenade near the pier's entrance. Blackpool Tower, opened in 1894, has computer-controlled changing lights, here illuminated blue. The tower in 2013, 2014 and 2015 was undergoing repairs. Beach portrait, with reflections, looking north towards the Tower and Central Pier from the Central Sands. The blue 'Bling Jewels', sponsored by Beaverbrook the Jewellers, occupy the promenade in front of the Tower.
