Costume of Pont-Leveque, Calvados. This woman wears bonnet of her village on top of a cornet "a la Parisienne." The cornet is decorated with chiffon. Her clothes show her to be a lady of leisure: merino-wool redingote trimmed with velvet, a shawl in imitation cashmere, a cashmere bag and a lace collar of three layers. Hand-colored fashion plate illustration by Lante engraved by Gatine from Louis-Marie Lante's "Costumes des femmes du Pays de Caux," 1827/1885. With their tall Alsation lace hats, the women of Caux and Normandy were famous for the elegance and style.
