I liked the pleasant way in whichsylvan Nature and Art had made friends in these beautifulgrounds, in which Nature had consented to overlook thevanity of the long aisles of lime, cut and trimmed informal and fantastic shapes, according to the taste of thetimes of bagwigs and patches. On every side wild birdsfluttered through these absurd trees, and in the thicketslurked innumerable pheasants, which occasionally issuedforth and stalked in stately, fearless groups over the 70.
