Chutes are frequently used to facilitate the movement of logs from the woods to the railroad landing. This timber was killed by a forest fire but it is still sound if logged in time. Felling and Bucking. — These operations usually go to- gether and the first consists of making an under cut with an axe on one side to direct the fall of the tree and then using a cross-cut saw to complete the cut. Formerly much valuable timber was lost in cutting high stumps especially in the West.
