Edmontonranks high among the up-to-date cities in possessing a largereading public, using the best literature and making use ofevery opportunity put within its reach. The premises on JasperAvenue had to be enlarged in January, 1914 and are even nowbecoming again straitened for room. The Strathcona Auditorium is greatly appreciated, beingused regularly by the Edmonton Medical Association, the LadiesHospital League, the W. C. T. U.; it has been used by Robert-son College for its closing exercises, and various organizationsuse it for committee meetings. These in addition to the Chil-drens Story-hour every EDMONTON PUBLIC LIBRARY—TEMPORARY QUARTERS 13 GENERAL REPORT To the Board of Management of the Edmonton Public Library: GENTLEMEN: Herewith are given some statistics of the work of theLibraries for the year 1913. The statements submitted apply in most cases to the periodof slightly over nine months during which the circulationdepartment has been in operation. The records are full ofencouragement. It would seem that never before were a publicso appreciative of library privileges. Unforseen demands havebeen made upon the as yet slender resources of the for the liberality of the Boards and the scope given theLibrarian and Staff, these demands would have been scantilymet. The almost overwhelming patronage of the libraries hasshown the urgent need. The wonderful book circulation speakswell for the intelligence of the community—too new to becomposed of many who may be considered to have much leisure.
