He strove to leadthem especially to the practice ofhumility, obedience, perfect sub-mission to the will of God, and atender devotion to the Blessed Vir-gin. Perfect submission to the willof God he exacted of all who chosehim as their spiritual guide. Anoptician, Vincent Lainez, one of hispenitents, had a son five monthsold, who was very sick and neardeath. Full of grief, he came toour Saint, and besought him to ob-tain from Almighty God the cure of. St. John Joseph. his child. But, Vincent, said theSaint, God calls it. No, no!exclaimed the distracted father,, He must leave me this child. Hetook my little daughter last year;that is sufficient. One for him, andthe other for me. The Saint an-swered with holy indignation, Yomought to submit to the will of God;:but since you do not wish to do so,very well, you shall see the child recovered, but ceased to-grow, and at the age of three years,did not show the least sign of intel-ligence. The unhappy father, whohad hitherto avoided the Saint,could not bear the sight of his un-fortunate child any longer. Hewent to the cell of Fr. John Joseph,cast himself at his feet, and con-tritely confessed fcis fault.
