A photograph of a patient with purpura on the leg This is a purplish or brownish red discolouration easily visible through the epidermis caused by haemorrhage into the tissues Small spots are called petechiae larger spots are called ecchymoses Purpura by itself is only a sign of other underlying causes of bleeding Purpura may occur with either normal platelet counts nonthrombocytopenic purpuras or decreased platelet counts thrombocytopenic purpuras Platelets help maintain the integrity of the capillary lining and are important in the clotting process
