Blue sky view Renaissance architecture 'bank palace' building, KfW Bank, Franzosische Strasse to Charlottenstrasse, Berlin

The former building of the Berlin Trading Company (Berliner Handelgesellschaft) is now used by the Berlin branch of the KfW Banking Group. The large building, occupying a block between Franzosische Strasse and Behrenstrasse, was built 1899 to 1900. It is typical of the Italian Renaissance architecture 'bank palaces' built at the time of the German Empire. The ground floor is distinct from the large columns and pillars of the main floors. In 1911 an annex to the building (on the left of the shot) was built at the corner of Charlottenstrasse. From 1949 to 1990 the building was the headquarters of the East German State Bank. It is designated an historic landmark.
