Blue sky white clouds view from ferry moored at the terminal to yacht club and Spinnaker Restaurant, Sausalito, San Francisco

Afternoon view, towards the Sausalito waterfront (Sausalioto Yacht Club and Spinnaker Restaurant), from a Blue and Gold Passenger Ferry, moored at the ferry terminal and ready to return to San Francisco. By 1926 a major auto-ferry route was established between San Francisco's Hyde Street Pier and Sausalito. The paddle ferry, Eureka, one of six historic ships currently moored at the Hyde Street Pier, was an integral part of US Highway 101. The auto ferry era came to end with the opening of the Golden Gate Bridge in May 1937. Car ferry services ended in March 1941. Passenger ferries, such as those operated by the Blue and Gold Fleet (seen here) to and from San Francisco's Pier 41, still operate, however, and offer some of the most scenic ferry journeys in the world, with fine view of the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz (left background in the shot) and Fisherman's Wharf waterfront in San Francisco. Tickets can be bought on the boat. Although near as the crow flies, Sausalito, before the introduction of auto ferry services, was isolated from San Francisco, wheeled traffic facing a 100 miles journey around the northern perimeter of San Francisco Bay to reach the seaside town.
