Statue of Pelagius of Asturias, known in Spanish as Pelayo at, Covadonga, Asturias, Spain. Pelagius of Asturias, circa 685 - 737, Visigothic noble who founded the Kingdom of Asturias and is known as the first king of Spain. The Battle of Covadonga was supposedly fought near Covadonga circa 720 between Muslim and Christian forces. The Christian army under Pelagius are said to have won. Some historians doubt the battle ever occurred, but whether legend or fact it became a symbol of the beginning of the reconquest of Spain from the Muslims and Covadonga is a pilgrimage site commemorating the battle and dedicated to Our Lady of Covadonga.
