Wren Italianised the facade, and theCastle was to some extent rebuilt and altogetherremodelled into something which later critics con-sidered monotonous and commonplace. The interiorwas decorated by the carvings of Gibbons andAntonio Verrios inert and luscious paintings ofJudith and Holofernes, Leda and the Swan, andthe like, which Evelyn, who saw the frescoes of.
