Genoese castle Caffa from XIV century in Feodosia, Crimea, Ukraine. October 4th 2008. City founded as Theodosia by Greek colonists from Miletos in the 6th century BC, was of sphere of influence of Byzantium. Since 1266 to 1475 Kaffa became Republic of Genoa major port and administrative center for the Genoese settlements around the Black Sea with the Europe's biggest slave markets. In 1347 Mongol army under Jani Beg besieged port. Suffered by Black Death infected in Central Asia, Mongols used infected corpses as a biological warfare to weaken Kaffa.
