Premature baby. View through the plastic sheeting of an incubator showing a premature baby weighing pounds ( kilograms). This tiny baby is in neonatal intensive care. It is on a respirator (at top), being assisted to breathe while given oxygen. Liquids are fed to it through intravenous drip tubes in its arm. Electrodes on its chest monitor vital signs such as heartbeat and rate of breathing. Inside the incubator temperature and humidity levels are controlled to provide premature or sick babies with ideal conditions for survival. An incubator also provides some protection from airborne infection.
