( cm), Ceramics, Qiao Bin (Chinese, active 1481–1507), According to the inscription on the back and sides of the couch on which the Buddha reclines, this depiction of the ultimate extinction of the historical Buddha was created as a private act of devotion and was originally part of a larger assemblage of figures: 'In the sixteenth year of the Hongzhi reign era of the Great Ming dynasty 1503, the chan monk Huitai from Pantingshan, Xiyan, fulfilled his desire and commissioned on sleeping Buddha, one Shakyamuni, one Maitreya, one Kshitigarbha, one Avalokitshvara, and seven lofty monks
