HEAVY EXPRESS CAR USED BY THE UTICA & MOHAWKVALLEY RAILWAY COMPANY Early in 1905 the Utica & Mohawk Valley Railway Companyplaced in service what is probably the largest and heaviestbaggage and express car ever built for electric railway designing the car to handle the regular baggage, freightand express service of the company, advantage was also takento try out an unusually heavy type of electrical equipment, andit is understood the experience gained with this car is being. AN EXTERIOR VIEW OF THE UTICA & MOHAWK EXPRESS CAR used to good advantage in deciding upon the equipment to beadopted for passenger service on the electrified section of theWest Shore Railroad from Utica west to Syracuse, upon whichwork is in progress. The express car is 56 ft. over the crown pieces and 8 ft. wideover sheathing. The side sills are of long leaf yellow pine,5^4 ins. x y]4, ins., with 8-in. x jkj-in. sill plates. The crossjoists are \V2 ins. x 5 v. ins. A slotted partition with door door sill to the side of the car instead of making the usualcurve. This arrangement of side and end doors greatly facili-. tates the loading and unloading of bulky freight and expressmatter, and also permits the carrying of long material as railsor poles. The carrying capacity is 20 tons. The car can be used as a locomotive for hauling purposes,and is fitted with radial draw-bars for pulling electric cars,and also with heavy M. C. B. couplers for hauling steam rail-road
