Duret haemorrhages. Gross specimen of a section through a brain stem showing Duret haemorrhages (bleeding, dark areas). These haemorrhages are most often caused by raised intracranial pressure. The brainstem controls automatic functions, sleep and arousal, and relays messages from the brain to the spinal cord. The prognosis for a patient with Duret haemorrhages is poor.
