These structures therefore fall underthe appropriate headings : Intestinal True-Glands. Glands of of Brunner. Intestinal Lymph-Follicles. Solitary inated glands. The follicles, crypts, or glands of Lieberkuhn are very nu-merous, forming an almost continuous layer of simple tubular de-pressions throughout the intestines, large as well as small. Theyoccupy nearly the whole depth of the mucosa, their wavy extremitiesapproaching the muscularis mucosae. The columnar epithelium ofthe free surface passes directly into the tubules to become the sphericalsecreting cells, many of which undergo mucoid distention and. Lieberkiihns glands lie between the bases of the villi, but are found upon the valvulae conniventes, Fig. 210. since the latter depend on the elevation of the submucosa for f^ A their formation, the mucosa /v^v^ v^^^t^ being reflected over the pro- ^ -- ^ jecting underlying tunic. Inthe lower part of the large in-testine the glands of Lieber-kiihn increase in size, becom-ing longer and possessingwider mouths, their orificesappearing as minute pits. The duodenum, especially in its upper part, possesses an additionallayer of true secretingstructures in the glands ofBrunner. These are thedirect continuations andhigher specializations ofthe pyloric glands of thestomach.
