Pelican Island NWR in Florida


Paul Kroegel (1864-1943) protected Pelican breeding grounds in the Indian River lagoon of Florida with his shotgun until Teddy Roosevelt made Pelican Island the first National Wildlife Refuge in 1903 and named him Warden.
