Formal approach to the Muscat ceremonial palace of the Omani Sultan Qaboos, built in 1971, no doubt as a grand statement designed to impress, after he became Sultan in 1970. It is said that the Sultan actually lives more simply elsewhere. By law contemporary buildings in Muscat must be in an Islamic style, meaning modern construction techniques that use traditional forms of Islamic architecture.
