As we wereconveyed swiftly through the city, we noticedthat the crowd parted at the sight of the offi-cial hat (which denotes rank) worn by ourbearers. The shops are open to the street, and theowners are shouting out their wares. We soon 1048 ST. NICHOLAS THE [Sept. LITTLE BOY ANDHIS TOYS. HEADING FOR SEPTEMBER reached the waters edge and boarded a small launch,which moved off and glided swiftly down the river. A large portion of the population live on the river insmall boats, and many of them never go ashore. We arrived in about ten minutes at another wharf,and found several ponies and their owners ready tocarry us up the hills. The trip up was a hard one forthe ponies, but in about an hours time we reached thetemple. We paid the drivers a few cash, and en-tered one of the back rooms of the temple, as we werenot allowed to go where the idols were. The priest wasvery civil and asked us to take dinner with him, but aswe had brought our own we declined. After we had had our lunch we asked the priest if hewould take us to see the idol for a quarter. He saidhe would, and led us into a very large room lighted byone lamp. On an altar in front of us were set bowls ofrice and other food for the idol. The idol was a veryhideous figure about twe
