It is situated on a slight eminence in thetown of Springer, and can be seen for miles around, the town being locatedon our beautiful western prairies. This dis-trict, as it was first laid out, comprised about forty sections of land, andhad a taxable valuation of $320,101 last year; the tax levy was 12 1-2mills; the scholastic census for 1909-10 was 258 white children and 137colored. Three separate schools, employing three teachers, are maintainedby the county for these colored children, in this district. The Wheeler district, while not so large as the Springer district, is one J9 > r>o n ^§ o W o en n oo. 20 of the richest of our school districts. Besides all of its valuable farmlands, it lies in the center of the greatest oil and gas district of southernOklahoma, and these interests, of course, are a large source of her Santa Fe Railroad owns valuable possession in this oil and gas has one of the most up-to-date school buildings in the state, ifshe does not lead in this respect. It was built at a cost of $6,000, and isheated and lighted with gas from the Wheeler oil field. The present termof school in the town of Wheeler was conducted by Professor Langstonand two lady assistants; a second school, which required one teacher, waslocated in another part of the district. Besides these, the county maintainsa separate school for negroes in this same district, making three schoolsand five teachers in all. The district contains about thirty-five sections ofland, with a tax valuation, from last years assessment, of $285,760; taxlevy, 15 mil
