Itwas rather surprising to the old man that his spiritual son Joeshould go against him, but such was true. Deacon Williamstook a strong stand and contributed no little to the planning ofthe majority; he was fearless and outspoken; he was generousand kind-hearted, cheerful in the discharge of his duties, andhad a large following. Mr. Williams supported Mr. Gibbons forthe pastorate of the church.
