Mar. 15. 1901.] STREET RAILWAY REVIEW. 187 OVERHEAD TROLLEY SHOE. A STREET CAR BICYCLE CARRIER. The standarJ motor equipment of the intcrurban cars of theUnion Traction Co., of Anderson, Ind., consists of two 50-C West-inghoiise motors, and the current required at starting is often inexcess of 300 amperes. It is found that even with the two trolleyswhich are used to take these heavy currents the trolley wheels willnot last for more than 2,000 or 3,000 miles. The wheels do notwear out but are burned up. In an endeavor to reduce the cost of renewing the wheels andalso do away with the annoyance of having two trolley poles towatch, the company is now experimenting with a sliding shoe, which. \y TROLLEY SHOE. ANDERSON, IND. the electrical engineer, Mr, A. S. Richcy, states he thinks will proveto be very satisfactory. The new device comprises a malleable iron harp and a coppershoe, which are shown in the accompanying drawings. The shoeis 6 in. long and semi-elliptical in side elevation with a groove J^ along the upper edge. On the bottom of the shoe is a dove-tail lug 3 in, long by ^ in, deep which is gripped by the harp. The harp has a round shank .)4 in. in diameter to slip inside thetrolley pole, the inclination of the shank to the body being suchthe base of the shoe is horizontal for the average height of thetrolley wire. The harp is in two pieces, one of which includes thewhole length of the shank, and the two are clamped on the lug ofthe shoe by two flat-head H in- screws counter sunk. The front endof the harp is brought out flush with the end of the shoe so that therewill be no hook to catch on the span wires in case the shoe lea
