Leg being treated for necrotizing fasciitis. Close-up of the left leg of a 62-year-old man who has necrotising fasciitis, caused by an infection that occurred following an insulin injection. Also known as flesh-eating disease, this is a rare bacterial infection of the subcutaneous tissue. The infection progresses quickly, causing blistering of the skin and necrosis (death) of the subcutaneous tissue. Treatment is with surgery to remove infected tissue, and antibiotics and skin grafts, although mortality rates are high.
