Hepatitis A viruses. Coloured transmission electron micrograph showing viruses causing hepatitis A. They belong to the picornavirus family which comprises viruses formed by an RNA core. Hepatitis A viruses have a diameter of approximately 25-30 nanometres. The virus causes a mild inflammation of the liver associated with jaundice. The virus is present in faeces of infected people and transmitted to others by faecal contamination of water and food. The incubation period varies between three to six weeks after the virus has entered the body. Magnification unknown.
