Frederick Handley-Page. View of the British aircraft designer Sir Frederick Handley-Page (1885-1962) in 1909. He is sitting in the first aircraft he designed. In 1910, Handley-Page became one of the first college lecturers in aeronautical engineering. He produced bombers during the First World War, the first of which, the 0/100, had a 30 metre wingspan and entered service in 1916. After the war, Handley-Page adapted his bombers to fly passengers around Europe. He invented wings with a slot along their front edge, enabling aeroplanes to fly slowly without stalling. Later he built more bombers, such as the Halifax, during the Second World War and the Victor V-bomber in 1952.
