Before temple of Mars (Ares), Paul, from rostrum, preaches on Areopagus before group of philosophers; statue of Mars (Acts 17:15-34) (BRD) 2 ribbons interlaced around central rod interspersed with bunches of grapes & vine leaves; floral cartouches in each side & each corner This series of the "Acts of Apostles" is based on the cartoons by Pieter Coecke van Aelst (the Younger) for the "Life of St. Paul" series. The Madrid series combines scenes from Aelst's "Life of St. Paul" series with the traditional Raphael group of the "Acts of Apostles" (Campbell). This is 1 of 12 extant panels within this set. In the Photo Study Collection, no. 6 "Conversion of Saul/Paul" is not represented here. The first series (at the Vatican, called "Scuola Vecchia") was commissioned from Raphael for Pope Leo X in 1515 to adorn the walls of the Sistine Chapel in Rome (Dimitrova). The original cartoons designed by Raphael for the Vatican's "Acts of Apostles" set are currently housed at the Victoria & Albert Museum (on loan from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II) (Dimitrova).
