They are usuallyabout half as tall as the thickness of the epithelium, andabout one-third as wide as they are tall. The height andcharacter of the papillae varies greatly, however, in differentpositions. In the red border of the lip and in the epithelium GLANDS OF THE SUBMUCOSA 325 lining the gingival space they are very tall and narrow, andapproach very close to the surface of the epithelium. Overthe gums and the palate they are much shorter and wider anddo not extend more than half-way through the papillae contain loops of capillary bloodvessels, andin some special nerve endings are found. Fig. 250. Stratified squamous epithelium from unattached mucous membrane of the corneous layer is absent. (About 200 X) Reticular Layer.—The reticular layer joins the papillarylayer without any line of demarcation, and is composed ofthe same kind of tissue, the fibers being arranged in a deli-cate network. Everywhere in the tunica propria are foundducts from mucous glands which lie in the deeper layers. Submucosa.—The submucosa is composed of firm connec-tive tissue in which the white fibers are in large, strongbundles, and elastic fibers are scarce. It contains twoplexuses of bloodvessels, both more or less parallel withthe surface. The outer is composed of small vessels forminga small meshed network, the deeper of large vessels morewidely separated. Lymphatic vessels everywhere followthe course of the bloodvessels. 326 THE MOUTH CAVITY Glands of the Submucosa.—The submucosa contains a greatmany small tubular glands. These are
