St Mary-le-Strand, from north west; by James Gibbs 1714-1717.

St Mary-le-Strand. One of the 'Fifty New Churches' or 'Queen Anne Churches', built by James Gibbs 1714-1717 in the English Baroque style. The projecting semicircular portico at the west end (recalling Wren’s south transept portico at St Paul’s, itself derived from Pietro da Cortona’s Santa Maria della Pace in Rome, which Gibbs would have seen when studying there). The north front with alternating curved and triangular pediments. The roofline is decorated with urns and a balustrade. In 1802 large numbers gathered to watch a procession celebrating peace with France; three of the crowd in the Strand were killed when a spectator on the roof of the church dislodged one of the urns, sending it crashing to the ground.
